If you have ever doubted a kindness you have given as some small thing, I invite you to reconsider that idea.

I should have awoken happy today. I was going to attend my first “regular, non therapeutic” yoga class. A milestone in my journey to heal my back. The sky a bright blue, sun shining and just chilly enough for me to appreciate the hoodie I had slipped on in order to enjoy my coffee outside.

I felt unable to take in any of that though. Life was weighing me down and I wasn’t feeling at all my usual self.

Kindness doesn’t change the circumstance, it colors the mood

The last week has been one of “those” weeks. A good friend unexpectedly lost his job. A new acquaintance is facing a significant health challenge. A close family member is struggling with a family change she doesn’t want. It all sat with me and coloured my mood. The beauty of the day  more backdrop than centre stage where it belonged.

When I arrived to the yoga studio I realized the later start meant that my normal parking area was not available. If I searched for street parking I was going to be late,so I entered the paid parking lot, accepting that I would be paying double what I was used to. Just another thing of no huge consequence, but a thing, nevertheless.

As I was getting out of my car and sorting through my wallet to come up with the correct amount of change, a woman walked towards me. She had a bright smile on her face. She said “If you haven’t paid for your parking yet, you can have my pass, it’s good for the day and I don’t need it.” Astonished, I  gratefully accepted it. I offered to pay her, but she declined. She gave me the pass and off she went.

It’s not the size, it’s the attitude

It wasn’t just the offer of the pass, but her whole attitude. It was as if she was getting the gift instead of giving it. Her kindness wasn’t just the pass, but her delight in doing so. It turned my whole day around.

None of the circumstances of my day had changed. All the things that had put me in a funk still existed, but that simple, small act of kindness changed my whole day. It’s a good reminder that it doesn’t have to be much, to make a big difference. So, a small act of kindness? No kindness is small and I am so appreciative of the one I received today. Here’s to all of us and the difference we can make in the lives of others, one action at a time.
